about

Solo viola melody demonstration recordings of all the pieces from my sheet music book 'Midnight on Platform 16B', available for viola, cello or violin. The sheet music also includes chords for guitar or other chordal instrument accompaniment, and a few of the tunes also have a harmony part. The sheet music is available as a physical book, and also as a pdf download. You can buy the sheet music at www.helenbell.co.uk/sheet-music.php .

If you buy the digital sheet music directly from Bandcamp or the physical book from me, you'll get an email with a voucher code to download these melody demo recordings. If you've bought the book elsewhere (e.g. Lulu, or a bricks-and-mortar shop) and would like a free download of these recordings, just send me an email and I'll send your code out.

These original compositions are influenced by the folk traditions of the British Isles, France, Scandinavia and the Balkans.

This collection of recordings was made in order to provide a quick reference for people who have the score - e.g. those who can't decide which tune they want to play/learn first can listen and choose, those who are less confident in their music-reading abilities can check they're getting it right, accompanists can learn the tunes and practise prior to an actual rehearsal, and it includes examples of bowing, phrasing and grace notes if inspiration for these is needed.

--

Please note - due to differing instrument ranges, some of the tunes in the violin version of the sheet music are in different keys to those in the viola and cello versions, and thus to these demo recordings. These tunes are a fifth higher in the violin sheet music.

They are:

Trip to Heligoland
The Ice Sculptor
The Last Shoe Shop in Camden
I Thought it was an Antelope
Betty's Mirror
Out of the Lock
Sopley Mill I & II
Walberswick
Leaving Whitby
Quiet River
On the Carpet
The Farrar Street Poisoner
Pillowfish

It is my intention to eventually record these in the violin version's keys, although not immediately (if you're interested in when it's likely to happen, drop me a line...).
